Why sponsorship?

Some of the animals we rescue are more difficult to re-home. Although we do have some successes, many animals in this category often stay with us for long periods of time. Some of them have the illness leishmania (caused by sand-flea bites). Until recently this was difficult to treat, but medical advances have made it possible to help these animals to live a long and happy life. It also means that they could now be re-homed if we can find the right people.

Others might have more severe illnesses or behavioural problems that makes them unsuitable to place with most families or people who are not experts in animal care. So they will stay with us at the refuge where our volunteers will give them walks and cuddles.

We hate to see an animal put to sleep when it is otherwise healthy and capable of leading a sheltered but happy life, so we will keep them here for as long as we possibly can. But it costs us a lot to keep animals in the rescue centre, so please sponsor one of our long-term residents.

It costs about 40 euros a month to keep a dog in long-term care. So if you could spare something, however much, it would help towards these costs. You will receive a sponsorship certificate and a welcome pack (worth 12 Euros). You will also be credited on the sponsors page and on the facts file page for your animal. We will then keep you up to date with his or her progress. So next time you are thinking about what to give to the child or adult who has everything for Christmas or a birthday, then why not give them a share in a dog!!

Please note, at the moment, we have no cats available for sponsorship, but may well have some in the future. However, you could still sponsor a dog. This would help us just as much!

The Costs of Caring

The costs of taking animals into our care and then looking after them on a daily business is considerable. Maybe more than you think. In the winter months, it costs around 550 Euros a week for rent, food, cleaning materials, electricity and so on. This does not include veterinary bills. In the summer, costs rise to 650 Euros when our well dries up and we have to have water delivered to the refuge.
