Bar staff donate to Christmas benefit
The less than festive rain in Spain did not bring much festive cheer to SOS Animal Refuge as volunteers struggle in the mud – made worse for the refuge and neighbouring homes by the construction work on the Fuengirola to Alhaurin el Grande road.
But the Christmas spirit has shown itself in a number of fund raising activities – and one held just as we said goodbye to 2009 raised a very welcome EUR400. Regulars at JJ´s Bar in Arroyo de la Miel piled in for an end-of-year fun extravaganza, featuring a quiz competition, a Play Your Cards Right, with prizes donated by local businesses and a bumper hamper raffle. Bar owner John Jones said that the bar regularly supports Cudeca and a developing world school and wanted to support the work of SOS in its end of year fund raiser.
And his bar staff showed real Christmas spirit &ndash they donated their wages for the night. Refuge Director Tony Byford said: "It was a lovely gesture by the bar staff and thanks to everyone who helped raise this fantastic sum."

Early birds catch market worm
Friends and SOS supporters Ronna, Sheila and Ian (pictured left to right) have been up at the crack of dawn to set off for the La Trocha Sunday market in Coin to help raise much needed funds for SOS – and their hard work has really paid off.
By the end of last year the stall had raised well on the way to EUR3,000.
Thanks to donations of good quality books, gifts and clothes, and demonstrating a great gift of the gab, they have drawn the crowds to their tables. Not only that – Ronna helped to make a summer bride very happy. She had a spectacularly pretty, new, wedding dress hung up behind the stall which caught the eye of another stall holder who had planned to rent her frock.
With a quick shimmy the bride to be was able to try on the pretty dress with pearl detail and decided that, at just EUR40 euros, she could not turn her back on such a beautiful bargain.
"The dress was perfect for her and it was fun to help her try it on. It's an early start because we like to get our favourite spot so we can set up the stall, and set out the SOS information posters, but we always have a really good laugh and joke with people and we have been really pleased with how much we have managed to raise," said Ronna.
If you think you would like to help by having a stall on your local market contact SOS. Ronna and Sheila will happily give advice and practical help and we usually have stock to supplement anything you may have to sell.
Or if you are having a clear out at home and have any items you think would be good to put on a stall, please let us know.

Fundraising can be FUN...
We have a lot of fun raising money for SOS and so can you (see picture, right).
And here are two of our best supports!
Bruce and Sue Sinfield, who own The Toucan Bar in Fuengirola, are great suporters of SOS.
They sell books to locals and holidaymakers and hold quiz nights. They have raised around 3,400 euros in just a couple of years.
So if you have run out of something to read on the beach, or fancy a cold drink in this friendly bar then pop in and say Hello, and support SOS! The bar is in C/Don Jacinto, just behind Hotel El Puerto, opposite the port."
